Times Higher Education recognized the University of Oxford as the world's top university of 2017, snatching the top spot away from the California Institute of Technology, which had held the top rank since 2012 when it displaced Harvard University. This is the first year in the history of this ranking that a university from the UK has held the top spot. The World University Ranking by the Times Higher Education assesses research-intensive universities of different countries around the world across four key missions: research, teaching, spreading new knowledge, and international outlook. World's Best Universities in Computer Science

ETH Zurich, the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, claimed the top spot in the 2016-2017 Times Higher Education World University Ranking of computer science institutions based on its strong performance across all three pillars of the overall score. In teaching alone, the university gained three positions since last year’s ranking. The university is now the only institution from outside the US and the UK to emerge among the top 10 in the overall world university ranking and the top 5 in one of the eight subject-matter rankings. The traditional dominance of world renowned Anglo-American universities is less distinct in computer science—a subject newly added to the ranking this year—as compared to the other subjects covered by the ranking. Only 37 universities of the top 100 are American or British, a figure that is lower than in any other subject. In addition, not only does a Swiss university claim the top spot, but 23 additional countries share the eminent top 100. Moreover, some institutions from outside the top 100 and even the top 200 of the world universities ranking are among the best universities in computer science. For example, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay ranked 82 in the computer science ranking and 400 in the overall world university ranking. The emergence of ETH Zurich as the leading computer science academic institutions tests the relevance of the rankings for the financial sustainability and reputational growth of these institutions. Despite "generous funding" from the Swiss government and producing 20  Nobel Prize Laureates, including Albert Einstein, the university has a relatively weak ability to attract funding in the commercial marketplace. The university's industry income score slumped considerably in the 2016-2017 ranking compared to the previous year even as it outperformed in other areas.

The QS World University Ranking

Every year a new class of college applicants from all over the world chooses from among 1000s of universities to hang their ambitions. Several respected agencies publish regular ratings for some of the best universities in the world, including QS, the Academic Rating of World Universities, the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), Times Higher Education (THE), and U.S. News, to establish guidelines for student choice and to systematize the information available about institutions of higher education.Annual rankings from the likes of QS evaluate universities based on a relatively standard set of factors but vary the underlying criteria and importance placed on each factor and sometimes introduce unique indicators that mean the difference between MIT being ranked number 1 by QS and number 5 by THE.THE introduces measures for the quality of teaching and research and the level of dissemination of knowledge and innovation while U.S. News delves into the reputation of universities' research and academics. The Shanghai rating is somewhat specialized, with a focus on the scientific and academic activities of universities in an aim to reduce the impact of the characteristics of national education systems on its final assessment. In contrast, the QS rating examines the reputation of universities within the academic environment. While university ratings may create decision frameworks for potential students and employers, data shows that certain factors may be more meaningful in practice, only some of which are captured by ratings agencies. The greatest draw for foreign students is the variety of programs offered by a university, ranging from specialty sciences, such as nuclear physics, to narrow fields of creative arts, including filmmaking. The reputation of universities and the comprehensive nature of the training programs offered are also highly valued by students and employers and the ratings seek to provide unique measures of these attributes.Learn more about each ranking: Academic Rating of World Universities; the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR); Times Higher Education (THE); U.S. News. In today’s Viz, we highlight the QS rating. This ranking introduces a student-to-faculty ratio, which is one of the most effective proxy metrics for teaching quality because of the reduced burden, on average, on the university’s academics. The QS criteria are as follow:Academic reputation (40%) - Academic experts’ opinions on the educational process in the universityEmployer reputation (10%) - Employers’ opinions on graduates and the quality of educationStudent-to-faculty ratio (20%) - Universities with the smallest groups and individual teachersCitations per faculty (20%) - Influence of the university on the field of scientific researchInternational faculty ratio (5%) - The best conditions for foreign teachersInternational student ratio (5%) - The best conditions for foreign students

The CWUR World University Rankings

World university rankings are lists of higher education institutions ordered using a combination of indicators. Some rankings rely mainly on research indicators, while others place a great deal of emphasis on opinion based surveys. Up to now, there has been no ranking measuring the quality of the learning environment as well as research without relying on surveys and university data submissions. The CWUR ranking measures the quality of education and training of students as well as the prestige of the faculty and the quality of their research could be constructed based solely on verifiable data. The results show that in addition to research performance, the quality of an institution’s alumni significantly affects its ranking. The indicators used to quantify these aspects are chosen to be robust against manipulation. The results of this study will be of interest to students, academics, university administrators, and government officials from around the world. Which university degrees give the best financial returns? //knoema.fr/zzqsqu/which-university-degrees-give-the-best-financial-returns 2017-07-11T14:29:22Z Alex Kulikov knoema.fr://knoema.fr/user/1847910
Which university degrees give the best financial returns?

The world's top economies increasingly depend on skilled workers, with college graduates in high demand. A report from the research firm PayScale provides calculations on the returns to higher education in US universities. Its authors compare the career earnings of college graduates with the present-day cost of a degree at their universities. Top universities may be growing ever more selective, but the returns on a college degree still depend far more on field of study than the choosiness of the university itself, according to PayScale. Engineering and computer-science students earn most, achieving an impressive 20-year annualised return of 12% (the S&P 500 managed just 7.8%). Engineers were also least dependent on institutional prestige: graduates from less-selective schools experienced only a slight decrease in average returns. Business and economics degrees also pay well, delivering a solid 8.7% average return. Courses in arts or the humanities may pay intellectual dividends but provide more mixed economic returns. Students concerned about their financial outlook should worry less about their school's rank and spend more time brushing up on maths.
