The dataset shows the total number of FAFSAs submitted by award year. FAFSA Data by Post secondary School indicates the number of FAFSAs that were sent to each school and FAFSA Data by State show the number of applications by state of legal residence.

This federal student loan portfolio includes Direct Loans, Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL), and Perkins Loans with outstanding balances. Data is run at the end of each month listed by federal fiscal year. Each federal fiscal year begins October 1 and ends September 30. Q1 ends 12/31, Q2 ends 3/31, Q3 ends 6/30, and Q4 ends 9/30.

The standard calendar quarters have been used, the first quarter (Q1) starts on January 1 and ends on March 31. The second quarter (Q2) goes through April 1 to June 30. The third quarter (Q3) is from July 1 to September 30, and the fourth quarter (Q4) is from October 1 to December 31
