How high are per capita food expenditures in your country?

Data from the US Department of Agriculture reveals sharp discrepancies in how much money people spend on food. Using the United States as a benchmark:

  • High food expenditure countries include Thailand, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Australia, and Israel, ranging anywhere from a fraction to as much as 37 percent above US rates (in US dollars per capita).
  • Lower food expenditure countries include Kuwait, Ireland, Russia, Turkey, Vietnam, Pakistan, and India, with Uzbekistan coming in as the lowest spender.
