14 September 2015 - An astronomical increase in migrants into Europe is straining the region's social and security resources and elevating political tensions within the EU as well as between the EU and former Soviet States. Today the Justice and Home Affairs Council of the European Council will meet in Brussels to discuss current measures and new proposals to address the migration crisis.

Today's Viz of the Day story captures in a few stark graphics some of the contours of this crisis, including the nationalities of the migrants - majority Syrian - the migrant demographic - 15 percent are children - and rankings, by country, of asylum applicants. The data, of course, does not capture the number of migrants trapped in the gray space of camps, train station platforms, and worse, the very issues that will be at the center of proposal in today's special meeting of the Justice and Home Affairs Council.
